To Help the Jersey Shore’s Comeback, Clean Ocean Action Launches 2013 Year of “Waves of Action” For The Shore
Year-Long Volunteer Recovery Action Plan Released Today
Clean Ocean Action (COA) held a teleconference today to announce the 2013 “Waves of Action” program, which will respond to the impacts of Superstorm Sandy and help improve and protect the marine environment. COA is engaging its network of organizations, businesses, citizens, and municipalities to help coastal communities throughout New Jersey and New York in need over the long term with volunteer action.

“Recovery will be a very long and challenging road,” said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action. “It is essential to rebuild better with environmental stewardship and resiliency and provide resources and support to keep the momentum going,” Zipf added.
Future Waves of Action days in 2013 will progress with the needs of communities and will keep the momentum going for continued improvement of the shore through debris clean ups, sustainable development plans, and projects to improve water quality.
“Even though it has been over two months since the Hurricane, there are still very real needs in many communities, and we will work to meet those needs for as long as it takes,” said Zach McCue, Clean Ocean Action Citizen Action Coordinator.
“Rebuilding Sea Bright will take a sustained effort for a couple of years. Partnering with Clean Ocean Action for regular volunteer days provides additional resources that will be very important to the long term recovery of the town,” added Frank Lawrence, Sea Bright Volunteer Coordinator, who participated in the teleconference on Thursday.

The Wave of Action on Saturday, January 19, is in unison with Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, which has become a national weekend centered on service.
“Many of our projects from December are registered again in January, since Waves of Action is the only clean-up effort that some parks and beaches have been able to have since Sandy. That said, there are also many new locations where people can help,” said Tavia Danch, Clean Ocean Action Education Coordinator.
A number of organizations and municipalities have been involved in not only the planning of, but are also participating in, Clean Ocean Action’s Wave of Action on January 19. These groups include: President’s Inaugural Committee, National Park Service, Bayshore Waterfront Park Affiliation, Monmouth County Park System, HOPE worldwide, Borough of Sea Bright, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Wall High School Environmental Club, AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassadors, Red Bank Friends of Maple Cove, United Methodist Committee of Relief, Alliance for a Living Ocean, Beach Haven West Community Association, Surfrider Foundation, South Jersey Chapter, Borough of Ocean Gate and Natural Resource Protective Association.
Over 1,200 people have already signed up to help to clean out homes, neighborhoods, parks, beaches, and waterways at 27 locations throughout New York and New Jersey, including Atlantic City, Long Beach Island, Sea Bright, Asbury Park, Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and Staten Island and Jones Beach, New York.
“Before Hurricane Sandy, many of the people interested in cleaning up New Jersey's beaches were environmentalists,” noted Lindsey Van Zile, Toms River South High School Senior and Waves of Action Project Leader. “Now, with the help of Waves of Action program, we can all come together and create solutions to major environmental problems and even help those in need,” she added.

Connecting Volunteers with Community Needs “For The Shore”
CLEAN OCEAN ACTION’S WAVES OF ACTION DAY
Connecting Volunteers with Community Needs “For The
Shore”
Long-Term Region-Wide Hurricane Relief Program Begins
Saturday, December 8, 2012
Atlantic Highlands, NJ – In response to the
devastation caused by Super-Storm Sandy, it is clear that the need for
volunteers is growing, Clean Ocean Action has launched a long term
volunteer initiative to help the communities and millions of citizens left
devastated in the wake of Sandy. Starting December 8th, and
regularly thereafter, COA will connect community needs throughout the NJ/NY
region with the volunteers willing to help through a program called “Waves of
Action.” Projects and volunteers register for December 8th's first Wave of
Action on a newly developed website www.ForTheShore.org.
“What Sandy destroyed in 48 hours will take months and years
to fix. We established the Waves of Action program to provide a
longer-term, sustainable strategy to help heal our coastal communities and
protect the quality of our region’s ocean,” stated Cindy Zipf, Clean Ocean
Action Executive Director, “we hope to help communities go green to save
big blue.”
As we stand tall and pull together to recover and rebuild
our own homes and lives, many are also donating time for neighbors and
communities. Added Lisa Cordova, Clean Ocean Action Volunteer and
Event Committee Member, “since the storm, a surge of volunteers is one of
the top needs for coastal communities.”
“In the aftermath of Sandy, volunteers are ready and eagerly
looking to help. Many of the impacted municipalities, businesses, and families
are working hard to put their pieces together and may not have the time or
energy to recruit and/or direct volunteers,” said Tavia Danch, Clean Ocean
Action Education Coordinator. “Clean Ocean Action is organizing the
day of service ‘For the Shore’ to streamline the process of connecting people
with projects.”
Starting Saturday, December 8, COA organized the first state-wide
“waves of action” days where COA’s network of organizations, businesses,
citizens and municipalities from Cape May to Montauk - along the Jersey Shore
and the South Shore of Long Island - are identifying and implementing projects
that are needed within coastal communities.
Clean Ocean Action has already organized many projects
throughout Jersey Shore towns for the first Wave of Action on Saturday,
December 8 including, Sea Bright, Long Branch, Toms River, Seaside Park,
Atlantic City, and Cape May. Projects are also sprouting up across New
York from Jones Beach to Hampton Bays.
"This is a great opportunity for people to make a real
impact in Sea Bright,” said Frank Lawrence, Sea Bright Volunteer
Coordinator, “restoring our shore communities will take a concerted effort
over many months, and we look forward to working with Clean Ocean Action
starting on the 8th.”
Types of projects include: beach, town, and park clean-ups;
food, household items, and furniture drives; fundraisers for wildlife and communities
in need; and/or home clean out and repair. The projects vary based on
real, on the ground needs. Over 500 volunteers have already signed
up to participate, but Clean Ocean Action is calling for more volunteers and
more projects to generate the most help.
Saturday, December 8 is the first Wave of Action to help
with the initial recovery from the devastation caused by Sandy, but there will
is a long journey forward to rebuild. With this in mind, Clean Ocean
Action will continue long-term Waves of Action in the future to help implement
a vision of sustainability—restoring better, greener, and bluer coasts.
To register for a project or sign up to volunteer, visit www.fortheshore.org or contact Clean Ocean
Action at (732) 872-0111.

Lights, Camera, Clean Ocean Action!
Beach Sweeps Video Online Release!
Sandy Levine, producer of the
video, is an award-winning television producer who was born and raised at the
Jersey Shore.
“I've known about and
respected Clean Ocean Action since the group began in the mid-1980s. I heard
that the Beach Sweeps were coming up and I felt compelled to be there to shoot
this video. The idea that thousands of people willingly volunteer to pick up
garbage was inspiring and I wanted to capture that passion and commitment,”
explained Levine. “When I arrived at
Sandy Hook, it was depressing; the sand was littered with all kinds of garbage.
A few hours later - the beach was pristine. The Beach Sweeps not only get rid
of ugly garbage - they remind us that our ocean and shore need protection. I'm
honored to be part of the effort to get out the word that we all can - and must
- do something to help," she continued.
Clean Ocean Action was
delighted Sandy Levine was able to produce the video. It provides an important opportunity for
everyone with access to the internet to learn about Sweeps and become inspired
to participate.
“Over the past 27 years,
volunteers have worked hard to collect, catalogue, and remove nearly 5 million
pieces of trash from New Jersey’s beaches and waterways,” stated Tavia Danch,
COA’s Education Coordinator. “This video will highlight the great work of
our volunteers and inspire others to follow in their footsteps,” added Danch.
Please visit Clean Ocean
Action’s website www.cleanoceanaction.org,
where the video is posted on our homepage.
It is also uploaded on Clean Ocean Action’s YouTube channel at: http://youtu.be/Z3v7ypuCZjQ.
Clean Ocean Action’s 27th
Annual Fall Beach Sweep will be held this Saturday, October 20 from 9-12:30 PM
at over 60 cleanup sites along the NJ shore and waterways from Middlesex to
Cape May County. For more information,
or to register groups of ten or more, please visit www.cleanoceanaction.org.

OCEAN CHAMPIONS TO DIVE INTO “TOUR FOR THE SHORE”
CAMPAIGN ONE WEEK FROM TODAY
CAMPAIGN ONE WEEK FROM TODAY
Paddle, Bike, and Rally from
Cape May, NJ to Montauk, NY for a Clean Ocean
Beach-lovers urged to “Get in Motion for the Ocean” to raise awareness of
ocean pollution threats and to support for a Clean Ocean Zone
Sandy Hook, NJ –– One week from today, on Friday August 10, Clean Ocean Action and other marine advocacy groups will begin a two week adventure along the coast of Cape May, New Jersey, to Montauk, New York, to raise awareness of ocean pollution issues and the need for a Clean Ocean Zone.
Facing threats from ocean blasting for oil and gas development, pollution, and reckless development, the Clean Ocean Zone initiative was created by concerned citizens along the New York and New Jersey coastlines to lock-out harmful pollution and industrial activities off the coast while locking-in permanent protection for future generations. The ultimate goal is for the citizen-drafted federal law to be enacted.
The Tour for the Shore will kick off in one week, next Friday in Cape May, making its way up the coast, through New York City, and along the South Shore of Long Island. The Tour will conclude in Montauk, NY on Friday, August 24th, 2012. To finish strong, there will be a 100-mile “Century Ride” from Babylon, NY to Montauk kicking off at the break of dawn at 6 A.M. on the 24 – bringing Dixon and other cyclists to Montauk at the same time as Pellegrino and other paddlers-at-sea.
The Tour for the Shore includes special events like; a bike cruiser ride through Fire Island, a town meeting-style environmental summit on the state of the Monmouth County Bayshore and to meet up with other advocates at “Blue Drinks” events. Beach-goers can discuss the Clean Ocean Zone, ocean conservation, marine policy and renewable energy with ocean champions from New Jersey and New York at local restaurants along the Tour.
For details about the dates, and locations of the Tour visit www.cleanoceanzone.org or call Clean Ocean Action at 732-872-0111.

[PRESS RELEASE] NY/NJ CONGRESSMEN JOIN TOGETHER IN BI-PARTISAN SUPPORT OF A CLEAN OCEAN!
For Immediate Release: July 25, 2012
Press Information: Lindsay McNamara
For Policy Questions: Cindy Zipf (732) 996-4613 or
Sean Dixon (732) 872-0111
NY/NJ CONGRESSMEN JOIN TOGETHER IN
BI-PARTISAN
SUPPORT OF A CLEAN OCEAN!
Ocean defenders say “NO” to expanded
offshore oil drilling and fight to protect clean ocean economies.
Sandy Hook, NJ--This afternoon, the New Jersey Congressional delegation voted
nearly unanimously in bi-partisan support for the ocean by saying “NO” to HR
6082, the latest attempt to bring Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling to the Atlantic
Ocean. Unfortunately, despite New Jersey’s strong bipartisan opposition,
and the support of New York’s coastal Congressional Democrats, the bill
ultimately passed by a margin of 253 – 170.
New Jersey Republicans LoBiondo (R-2nd), Runyan (R-3rd),
Smith (R-4th), Lance (R-7th), and Frelinghuysen (R-11th) joined with New Jersey
Democrats Andrews (D-1st), Pallone (D-6th), Pascrell (D-8th), Rothman (D-9th),
Holt (D- 12th), and Sires (D-13th), and coastal New York Democrats Bishop
(D-1st), Israel (D-2nd), McCarthy (D-4th), and Nadler (D-8th) in voting against
this bill that could bring oil and gas rigs to the greater Mid-Atlantic Ocean
within the year.
The five New Jersey Republicans voting no to HR 6082 were
only joined by 4 other members of the Republican caucus – making the NY/NJ
delegation the fiercest bi-partisan group defending clean ocean economies.
“The bipartisan support for the ocean by the NY and NJ
Congressmen today affirmed the region’s longstanding leadership and bi-partisan
commitment to our clean ocean economies,” said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director
of Clean Ocean Action. “We are extremely proud that our leaders put politics in
the back seat, instead choosing to protect our fisheries, coastal businesses,
and our Atlantic Ocean.”
“All along the New Jersey and Long Island coastlines, our
Representatives have heard the voices of coastal citizens and businesses,”
noted Clean Ocean Action attorney Sean Dixon; “bringing oil and gas drilling to
the Atlantic Ocean would risk the ruin of our billion-dollar commercial and recreational
fisheries, our billion-dollar tourism and recreation industries, and our
priceless history of ocean stewardship.”
This vote, the fifth or sixth vote by the House of
Representatives trying to open a majority of the nation’s oceans (including the
Atlantic Ocean) to offshore energy production, will not likely be passed by the
Senate, and if it was, President Obama has promised a veto.
This summer, Clean Ocean Action will be holding a “Tour for
the Shore” – travelling from Cape May Point, NJ on August 10th to Montauk
Point, NY on the 24th, holding rallies and meet-ups in each of these
Congressional districts to thank these Representatives for their commitment to
the ocean and to call for the establishment of the nation’s first Clean Ocean
Zone (www.cleanoceanzone.org).
