NY & NJ Unite at Hands Across the Sand on May 19, 2018!

On Saturday, May 19th ocean defenders united on land and sea for the 8th annual, international Hands Across the Sand movement. Hands Across the Sand is a grassroots movement that brings citizens of the world together to show unified opposition of fossil fuels and support for clean energy solutions.

Clean Ocean Action worked with local Surfrider Foundation chapters, Sierra Club NJ, Patagonia Bowery and many other local businesses and organizations to coordinate movements at three different locations around New York and New Jersey. Thanks to these efforts, citizens gathered on the beaches in Rockaway, NY, Bradley Beach, NJ and Atlantic City, NJ, where Margo Pellegrino launched her Armada for the Ocean Paddle. Her two week journey along the water arrived in D.C. on June 9 for March for the Ocean.

After joining hands in the driving rain and stormy seas, organizers and participants sought shelter at Rockaway Brewing Company’s warehouse space in Arverne, NY. Patagonia provided reusable cups and set up a table to highlight their partnerships with local enviro’s like Surfrider and Clean Ocean Action. While sipping delicious beer and chowing down on pizza, folks were able to listen to speeches presented by representatives of the organizations that helped plan the event.
